Amazing Grace

On Friday Night I saw Amazing Grace, a new movie directed by Michael Apted. It's a biopic about William Wilberforce, the MP who did the most to stop the British slave trade in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was released on the 200th anniversary of the passing of the UK abolition act.

I liked this film very much. It was uplifting without being sappy. It has many British character actors you will recognize from other movies (the two most famous being Albert Finney and Michael Gambon). The costumes and scenery do a very good job of evoking the era.

The plot is perhaps a little predictable, although interestingly most of the story is told in flashback. The star, Ioan Gruffudd, carries the film. Now perhaps I have to watch the Fantastic Four movie to see him as Reed Richards.

* I just read a good review of this movie on Salon --JM
