David Geffen Made A Mistake

In the middle of a Slate article about the new Arcade Fire album - a cause for celebration, really people! - I found this bon mot:
Tom DeLonge, [...] co-leader of the snotty little pop-punk band Blink 182, has formed has a new group, Angels and Airwaves, which strives to re-create the reverb-heavy vastness of U2-circa 1986, with unintentionally comic results.
Again, that link was http://youtube.com/watch?v=lAqU4CNoE0M and ... after you go watch it ...

Wow, can you believe David Geffen spent thousands of dollars paying for that music and that video? I hope The Edge told the guitar player he wants his effects pedals back.

Better yet, this song was:
  • used in the 2006 NFL Opening Night Game
  • used in an introduction to game 7 of the 2006 NLCS
  • used in promotional commercials for the 2006 FIFA World Cup
  • used in the trailer for the film Chasing Temptations
  • was played live at the Vista Launch Party. (double ouch!)
  • used as background music on Sportscenter.
  • used as background music for a commercial for the new show, The Lot.
Couldn't they just have used the opening of "Bad" or "Where the Streets Have No Name" or (for ESPN) "Rusty Cage"?
