Another Bullshit Night in Suck City

Props to Nick Flynn for the title. I haven't read his book and it can't possibly live up to that great title. No, I am just ripping the title off because I think the words string together nicely. (My first take on a title was "Damn, I drank all this coffee, but still feel sleepy", which is accurate, but less catchy.)

Yesterday was just like a weekday, apart from the sleeping in till 10:30 part. Mmm, delicious driving across the lake to work, and, mmm, tasty bug triage. What keeps me busy? Here is part of the answer.

So why am I so exhausted today? It must have been that crazy night I had ... oh, wait, I watched a DVD and then fell asleep on the couch with Alec Baldwin and Shakira. Half of that mental image is pleasing, the other half terrifying. They were the guest host and musical guest last night, respectively, on Saturday Night Live: A Season on Life Support.

I was roused from heavy-lidded lassitude long enough to hear Alec Baldwin tell the ladies and gentlemen that Shakira was about to perform her song "Don't Bother" and in a semi-conscious torpor I thought to myself:
Shakira. Now why have I heard of this person?
followed, as the camera turned, by
    Holy crap, she is hot!
But here's what I remember about the song - as opposed to the singer:

  1. Shakira, god bless her (and her hair), is a very poor lip-syncher.

  2. The guitars came and went. I realize dance music is like that, but, my inner Doug Martsch cried "no, keep playing!"

  3. There was some grrl power stuff in the lyrics IIRC. Perhaps Shakira has been hanging out with Gwen Stefani.

  4. All that aside, it was a pleasant enough experience, and I had a sudden insight into why people buy pop music. Shakira, if I give you my eighteen dollars, will you be my friend?
